Management of Patients with Both Medical and Psychiatric Illness

Objectives:

  • Assessment and treatment of neuropsychiatric conditions occurring in patients with medical illness
  • Acquiring knowledge of the use of psychopharmacology in patients with medical illness
  • Learning how patients cope with chronic medical illness, and psychotherapy approaches for patients experiencing problems coping
  • Psychological aspects of grief and preparing for death.

Description:

This rotation involves students becoming part of the psychiatric consultation-liaison team, which provides psychiatric expertise to physicians caring for medical or surgical patients at the Ottawa Hospital (General Campus).  Students would be involved in consultations from the medical wards, along with a junior resident and senior psychiatry resident.  Supervision occurs daily with a staff psychiatrist working on the consultation-liaison team.
