Outpatient and Nursing Home Geriatric Psychiatry

Objectives:

  • To diagnose and to treat psychiatric disorders in the elderly, with a strong focus on Behavioural Problems in Dementia
  • To work with a multidisciplinary team
  • To improve interview skills  

Description:

The student will follow a Geriatric Psychiatrist in all his daily activities. Two and a half days a week will be devoted to exposure to patients being treated in the Geriatric Psychiatry Day Hospital, Out-Patient Clinic, and the Electroconvulsive Therapy Service. Another two and a half days will be exposure to patients, mainly suffering from Dementia, in Nursing Homes.Student's supervision can be done in either of the two official languages, however, a good understanding of French would be an asset for the Day Hospital component. Other than the Day Hospital component, most of the patients and their caregivers primarily speak English.

LOCATION: Royal Ottawa Hospital and other locations in Ottawa, Arnprior and Pembroke
DURATION: 1-4 weeks
