Inpatient Geriatric Psychiatry

Objectives:

To learn to recognize and treat affective disorders in the elderly, work within a multidisciplinary in-patient team, and improve interviewing skills.

Description:

Under the supervision of the staff psychiatrist, the student will interview patients admitted under his/her care and follow them throughout their inpatient admission, participating actively in treatment decisions, contacts with family and liaison with outside agencies as appropriate. Outpatient follow-up after discharge may also be arranged if time allows.  The student will be encouraged to observe members of the multidisciplinary team in their interactions/evaluations of the patient and his/her support system.

LOCATION: Geriatric Psychiatry Services, Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre

DURATION: 1-4 weeks
