Geriatric Day Hospital Psychiatry

Objectives: To diagnose and treat common psychiatric disorders afflicting the elderly in a Day Hospital setting.

Description: The student will be assigned to the Geriatric Psychiatry Day Hospital Service at the Royal Ottawa Hospital. There will be exposure to the diagnosis and treatment of the common psychiatric disorders of old age, namely depression and dementia.  The elective will provide experience in working with a multidisciplinary team in a Day Hospital setting.  Consultations involving inpatients, outpatients and residents of nursing homes and boarding homes will be done with the supervising physician. There will be exposure to research methodology in ongoing studies in the Geriatric Psychiatry Services.
