FellowshipOverview
The Department of Psychiatry offers various Fellowships in a range of specialties, including Forensics, Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Addictions, Eating Disorders, Youth, Geriatric Psychiatry and Schizophrenia.
Research Fellowships are also available through the Institute for Mental Health Research. Application for a position at any given time is subject to the availability of a Supervisor in a given discipline. It is important to note that the Fellowships are initiated and designed according to the applicant's goals. Fellowships may be either clinical or research based, or involve a combination of both clinical and research work.
How to Apply
Applicants are invited to submit the application form along with all listed required documents. The applicant's attached statement of Fellowship Goals is then sent to the Clinical Director of the relevant program and a preliminary decision is made regarding the viability of the proposed fellowship and a potential supervisor is determined. The applicant is then invited for an interview with the potential supervisor in order to discuss and define in greater detail the nature of the Fellowship. Once a Fellowship program is agreed upon by the applicant and supervisor, the completed documentation is forwarded to the Departmental committee and then the Faculty of Medicine for approval.
Funding
Fellowships can be funded in various ways.
Clinical fellowships may be self-funded, meaning that the candidate must possess a license to practice, granted by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). The Fellow must submit billings through the hospital-based system for the Ontario Hospital Insurance Plan. In accordance with the Professional Association of Interns and Residents of Ontario (PAIRO) regulations, Fellows are allowed to keep up to $90,000 of their earnings. All overage earned by Fellows is placed in a Fellowship Fund that is to be made available to future Fellows applying for small research development grants. Fellows wishing to develop research proposals or acquire short-term funding for a specific portion of a defined research project are invited to apply in writing for funding from the Fellowship Fund. Please note that all purely Research Fellowships must be funded by grant monies acquired by the Fellow.
Clinical fellowships may also be funded depending on the specific program or division. For example, clinical fellowships in Child/Youth Psychiatry at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) are paid by the CHEO Psychiatry Associates. And so the fellow receives a salary and can focus on education rather than worrying about billing.
Foreign Applicants
All foreign Applicants, from outside Canada who do not have Canadian citizenship must provide official documented proof of funding from either a University, hospital, government or recognized funding agency.
