Assessment of the Psychiatric Status and Early Stages of Clinical Addictions Elective

Objectives: To familiarize the medical student with continuum of care-addictions treatment, including assessment, acute care, rehabilitative treatment (In-patients, Out-patients), aftercare, specialized support services and dual diagnosis treatment. This elective can be tailored to the student's interest.

Description: A student can develop expertise in initial assessment of an intervention in addiction problems, management of acute withdrawal from alcohol and other drugs, and assessment of concomitant medical and psychiatric problems. The student may be involved with group and individual psychotherapy, as part of a multidisciplinary treatment team, in either an in-patient or out-patient setting, in supportive programs for post-treatment addiction, patients with specialized psychosocial or psychological problems, and regular aftercare following addition treatment. A student can also choose to participate in clinical research projects as they are available. Areas of interest are: biological markers for alcoholism, personality and alcoholism, nutritional factors in craving for alcohol, and outcome evaluation of treatment programs.
